3) Ohai Coal in Southland closes. After many years of debates and lawsuits regarding the sustainability of coal mining, Ohai Coal in Southland has closed. 4) Project Kereru in Dunedin has been given wings. Project Kererū is a voluntary community-based Conservation Project that cares for sick and injured kererū, in partnership with Forest and Bird Dunedin, the Department of Conservation, and The Wildlife Hospital – Dunedin. Did you know kererū are essential to Aotearoa’s biodiversity? They are the only bird with a big enough gap to consume (and promote the seed dispersal) of karaka, miro, tawa and taraire. 5) KiwiHarvest branches are expanding nationally, and they now have five branches in four cities.
