Vehicles on Beaches Bylaw

Thank you Richard Davison at the Otago Daily Times for publishing an article about the first round of verbal submissions before the Clutha District Council yesterday. Fifteen speakers addressed the Councillors about the proposed ‘Vehicles on Beaches Bylaw.’

Pro Bylaw comments included:

1. Sea lions/pakake did not evolve with vehicles; therefore, they have not evolved the behavioural adaptions to mitigate the threats vehicles pose them. Hence they are wandering on to roads, as they’ve become accustomed to vehicles in their habitats.

2. The time to save endangered sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins/hoiho is while they are still in existence.

3. How ironic it seems that people who want to enjoy natural resources drive on to beaches.

4. That driving on to beaches is convenient: rather than necessary in most situations.

5. Use a wheelbarrow to transport heavier items on to the beach: diving gear, picnic hampers etc.

6. Safety and tranquillity is significantly reduced when there are vehicles on beaches.

7. Many locals did not sign on to “live beside a racetrack.”

8. The Bylaw is an essential preventative measure for the Future.

9. While the minority’s freedom will be restricted by not being able to drive/race on beaches, the majority’s freedom will be enhanced.

10. Exceptions include launching/retrieving boats, accessing private land, emergency and wildlife personnel and holders of disability passes.

Thank you for capturing what may be the most gorgeous photo of me too! 😉
