“There comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness… that time is now.”
– Wangari Maathai
Summer is once again upon us, which means more whānau time, beach days, singlets, stubbies, BBQ’s and… New Zealand sea lions/pakake breeding season.
Here are 5 simple tips to live more consciously this summer:
1) Please walk – opposed to drive on to beaches where sea lions are present. Sea lion cows are currently full of baby and even more vulnerable to bulls and human interference. Equally so when cows are caring for their pups. They are yours, and mine to care for and protect.
2) Please keep your dogs on a leash where sea lions are present, to protect your dog, and sea lions.
3) Lather up with ocean-safe certified sunscreens. My tried-and-tested favourite sunscreen brands are My Sunshine Natural Sunscreen, The Ama Life Nature’s Amour SPF30, Seasick Sunscreen Co. Daily Face and Body Sunscreen and Back to the Wild SPF 50+ Sunscreen.
4) Wear a hat to protect the delicate skin on your face and neck. I am a fan of Will & Bear and have found my Rider Bone hat to be great coverage, while allowing my skin to breathe.
5) Please hold on to your waste, until you can dispose of it properly. We all have a part to play in protecting Papatūānuku for our tamariki.
