WWF’s Protect our Oceans Campaign

Shane Jones, the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries of New Zealand, has arguably been making some very serious and reckless decisions and putting the health of Aotearoa’s environment and ultimately its people at risk.

We cannot eat money. There is no alternative, or taking shortcuts to conserving our one Earth/Papatūānuku – so the oceans and its species may thrive; so the soil may be fertile to grow the crops we rely on; and so the impacts of climate change may be mitigated.

If you disagree with Shane Jones scrapping the Fishing Related Mortality Limit of 52 endangered New Zealand sea lions/pakake per year; or scrapping the plans for the Kermadec Islands/Rangitāhua Ocean Sanctuary; or his plan to make coal mining consents easier to double Aotearoa’s mining exports (already worth 1.03 billion). Get involved in WWF New Zealand’s campaign calling for 30% of Aotearoa’s ocean to be placed within Marine Protected Areas by 2030: https://giveshanejonesthefinger.co.nz/. WWF New Zealand’s CEO, Dr Kayla Kingdon-Bebb stated, “Shane Jones has been crystal clear that driving export-led economic growth is his number one priority, at whatever cost – even if that means pushing our threatened native species to extinction and plunging our ocean into a further state of decline. Because much of our ocean is out of sight, out of mind, Shane Jones thinks he can get away with turning a blind eye to the crisis we face.”
