Bird of the Year 2024

“Did I hear you shout correctly?”

“Yup, it’s Forest & Bird’s ‘Bird of the Year’ again!”

Sorry I’m late to the party! My bird and I have been busy setting up our nest in preparation for laying our eggs in late September. At 65 cm, life isn’t easy for a penguin like me. Firstly, there are a lot less tasty fish to be found these days. Sometimes I worry we’ll starve. Secondly, lots of penguins I know are getting sick with Diphtheria or Avian malaria. Thirdly, even though I don’t like ice, or being around other penguins, none of my family were asked to star in ‘Happy Feet’.

You’ve carried me in your pockets (on your 5 NZD), now carry me in your heart. You’ve got until the 15th of September to vote for me – a yellow-eyed penguin/hoiho, who wishes to remain anonymous. Click: https://www.birdoftheyear.org.nz/ to cast your vote – and keep your trawl nets in your boat.
