Whether you are a climate change/global warming believer or denier; we share Papatūānuku with many other beings, all of whom rely on it. The impacts of a warming and changing planet is all around us and natural disasters are becoming more frequent. The most recent examples are the tragic flooding in the North Island and Cyclone Gabrielle.
It is each and every one of our responsibilities to leave Papatūānuku better than we found it, for future generations. In the wild, the adaptable organisms survive; so let’s learn from nature and be proactive.
I encourage everyone to get together an Emergency Bag to have on stand-by.
For an Emergency Bag, (which conveniently doubles as a hiking pack) you will need:
1. Water treatment tablets. I recommend Coghlan’s Drinking Water Germicidal Tablets.
2. A torch and/or lantern. I recommend Kathmandu’s Goal Zero Crush Light.
3. A first aid kit. (Not pictured).
4. Hand Sanitiser. (Not pictured).
5. Wet wipes, preferably biodegradable or compostable. (Not pictured).
6. Freeze-dried meals. For my vegetarian and vegan friends, I recommend Local Dehy; for my carnivore friends I recommend Back Country Cuisine. (Not pictured).
7. A powerbank.
8. A Quick Dry Towel. I recommend Macpac’s Large Sports Towel.
9. A Survival Blanket.
10. Gaiter. I recommend Macpac Gaiter, to keep your footwear dry.
