You will know the Hoiho – they are the bird on the New Zealand five-dollar note.
Despite their status, they are on the brink of extinction.
Hoiho are endemic and breed on the south-east coast of the South Island, Stewart Island / Rakiura, and the Subantarctic Islands.
According to the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust, there are approximately 225 breeding pairs in New Zealand.
Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust field manager Dave McFarlane said numbers on mainland New Zealand are dwindling fast.
Threats to Hoiho are human disturbance, dogs and habitat loss.
