Māori Language Week

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori/Māori Language Week occurs annually in Aotearoa between the 12th – 19th of Mahuru/September and is an annual recognition of Te Reo Māori. This year is particularly monumental, as it marks 50 years since the Māori Te Petihana/Language Petition’s success. On the 14th of Mahuru 1972, the Māori Te Petihana was presented to Parliament with over 30,000 signatures and signalled a change in the Maōri language movement.

Next week for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Sea Society is handing their platforms to Māori we admire and respect. Their perspectives and opinions are their own, and while they may not reflect Sea Society’s perspective, we believe they are valid.

We hope you enjoy learning about Te Wiki o te Reo Māori from the perspective of Māori and allow their thoughts to marinate.
