Friends and whānau in Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau, save the date: Saturday 8th June, 1.00pm. The time has come to stand up, come together as a community, and March for Nature! Greenpeace Aotearoa have organised a peaceful protest starting from Aotea Square in Auckland CBD against the Fast-Tracks Approval Bill.
Why care about the Fast-Tracks Approval Bill? If this ominous and reckless bill comes into effect, it will enable quick decision-making for infrastructure and development projects considered to have significant regional or national benefits. Benefits for the economy – but to the detriment of society, the Earth/Papatūānuku, and the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Furthermore, a separate process for approvals under different legislation will include: resource consents, notices of requirement, and certificates of compliance (Resource Management Act 1991); concessions (Conservation Act 1987); authority to do anything otherwise prohibited under the Wildlife Act 1953; archaeological authority (Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014); marine consents (Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012); land access (Crown Minerals Act 1991); and aquaculture activity approvals (Fisheries Act 1996).
This begs the questions: after our only home has been exploited for profit and convenience, is the plan to eat money?
