We are not just interested in speaking on behalf of New Zealand sea lions/pakake, we are interested in The Catlins local’s voices. We have heard the local’s concerns about their freedom being affected by restricting vehicles on two beaches in The Catlins and about where they can launch their boats. We have created two maps; one map detailing boat launch sites in The Catlins and one map detailing sea lion/pakake distribution.
Our aim is to achieve middle ground – where the local’s can enjoy their backyard and sea lions/pakake can feel safe and recover. You do not have to care for sea lions/pakake to benefit from vehicles being restricted on two beaches; you may care about fishing; clean coasts equal cleaner water, equal healthier aquatic species. You may care about the revenue the tourism industry brings into the Clutha District, of which your rare wildlife is the primary attraction. What benefits Mother Earth/Papatūānuku, directly benefits us.
