Protect Wildlife in The Catlins

Thank you, Richard Davison at the Otago Daily Times; it is good to see another article addressing the current threats facing wildlife in The Catlins. The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust have made a proposal to the Clutha District Council calling for better dog control measures to protect penguins at Jacks Bay. Trust General Manager Sue Murray stated, “Jacks Bay is home to several yellow-eyed penguin which breed there and, in November 2010, an off-leash dog killed one of the breeding adults despite the remonstrations of a local person.” “The trust wants to reduce the risk of a similar event occurring, which is why we advocate for dogs on leashes at all times.”

The Clutha District Council’s proposed ‘Vehicles on Beaches Bylaw’ opens for submissions TOMORROW. The online form will be available on their website: https://www.cluthadc.govt.nz/. Anyone eligible to vote can vote – resident or non-resident. Please take this opportunity to speak up on behalf of indigenous, endangered animals who cannot.
