Solar Desalination

Solar Desalination Skylight

Meet Denmark-based New Zealander Henry Glogau. He is the inventor of the Solar Desalination Device; which utilises Chile’€™s abundance of solar energy and seawater to produce natural diffused light, drinking water and energy. The skylight produces 440 ml of purified water per day and the salt brine waste from the evaporation process is used to create energy. 12 salt batteries can provide 9.53 volts, which powers a LED light strip at night and is charged by a mini solar panel during the day. He is a finalist in the TOYOTA 2021 Lexus Design Award.

Henry has also impressed judges at The Designers Institute of New Zealand for his SnowCap: Deployable Emergency Shelter, which “Embraces and utilises extreme conditions to its advantage, rather than fight against them.”

According to Henry: “Governmental systems will face growing stresses such as climate change, therefore we need to re-imagine our living environments in a sustainable and autonomous way to survive.”
