Depression is a serious and complex illness. Depression is caused by prolonged stress, genetic vulnerability, and / or impacted brain function: in the Amygdala (associated with emotions), the Thalamus, and the Hippocampus (associated with processing long-term memory). It is not a choice.
Depression, whether short-term or long-term, can be successfully managed with the guidance and support of mental health specialists, medication and therapy. Seeking exterior help is essential, as untreated depression can result in suicide.
The stigma associated with depression is harmful and unfair, and may dissuade people from seeking help. In addition, the harm caused by the blurring occurring in some cases of cold-blooded murder, portrayed as suicide.
