Happy World Wetlands Day – The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands!
The 2nd of February marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on the 2nd of February 1971, in Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Wetlands are important because:
1) They control the environment, including fauna and flora life.
2) They clean the water that flows into them by decreasing the flow rate and separating particles.
3) They reduce the effects of flooding by absorbing heavy downfall and releasing water gradually.
4) They support more species than any other habitat.
5) Eight of twenty-seven of New Zealandâs native fish live in wetlands, such as inanga, short-finned eels, kokopu and bullies.
